Abstract:Objective To observe the patterns of change of serum glucose, lipid and protein with age in apparently healthy populations in order to contribute to the determination of the reference range and disease prevention. Methods A total of 4041 apparently healthy volunteers were recruited along with information on their age and gender. Serum levels of glucose, lipid (TC, HDLc, LDLc, TG) and protein (TP, ALB) were detected with an automatic biochemical analyzer. The relationships between these indexes and age were explored. Results Serum glucose, lipid and protein levels increased or decreased gradually with age(P<0.01). Among these indexes, serum levels of GLU (5.05±0.43) mmol/L, TC (4.39±0.6) mmol/L, LDLc (2.39±0.51) mmol/L and TG (0.79±0.34)mmol/L increased, but HDLc (1.52±0.3)mmol/L, TP (74.03±3.81)g/L and ALB (47.79±2.86)g/L decreased with age, respectively. Trend analysis with the Cox-Stuart test in R showed that the monotonic trend of change with age was very significant (P<0.01). Conclusions Serum levels of glucose, lipid and protein vary with age, suggesting that the influence of age has to be taken into consideration in the process of establishing the clinical reference range. For patients of diabetes, coronary heart diseases and other senile chronic diseases, these tests should be conducted regularly to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases as soon as possible.
