Research on the entrepreneurial learning manner of start-ups: a multi-case study based on Chinese high-tech start-ups

Abstract: High-tech entrepreneurship which is driven by innovation is more and more important to the economic growth, but these high-tech start-ups always demonstrate high rate of failure during its development process. Entrepreneurial learning is an important mechanism to break through the liabilities of newness of high-tech entrepreneurship. Based on four high-tech start-ups in Zhejiang, we attempt to explore the relationships among different learning manners, and the dominant learning manner at different development stage. The result shows that action learning is based on experiential learning and cognitive learning, and questioning experience in practice to develop new knowledge. Meanwhile, this study also demonstrates that experiential learning is the dominated learning style in the create period, cognitive learning is dominated in the survival period, and the combination of cognitive learning and action learning is the dominated learning in the growth period. The result contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurial learning in dynamic view and the extension of current theory of entrepreneurial learning.

摘要: 依靠创新驱动的高技术创业对本土经济发展的作用日益明显,但是高技术企业在成长过程中面临创业失败的概率极高。创业学习是突破高技术创业的新创弱性的一个重要机制。本文通过对浙江省四家高技术新企业的多案例分析,探索性研究了新企业发展过程中不同学习方式之间的内在联系,并提出各发展阶段的主导学习方式。研究结果表明,实践学习是在经验学习和认知学习的基础上展开的,是在实践中对已有经验知识进行质疑和产生新的知识。同时还发现,企业发展过程中创建期以经验学习为主,存活期则是主要依赖认知学习,成长期以认知学习和实践学习作为促进企业成长的主要学习方式。这一研究结果从动态的角度对创业学习加以理解,扩展现有的创业学习理论。
